In the Washington County, Pennsylvania,
Census of 1850, there is a family listed by the name of Baglin.
In 1860, that family is listed by the name Bagley. In 1870, it was back to
Baglin again.
No, they did NOT change the spelling by themselves; the census taker did it.
It is thus we find the interesting twists and turns that census recorders
and family names provide!
A former neighbor of the Baglin family,
writing to my aunt or a cousin sometime in the 1930s,
describes Orlando Baglin, Sr. as being a "Johnny Bull" from England, who worked
hard and was respected
by his fellow employees at the Hayes Factory (a wagon making plant) where
he was a supervisor in the spoke making division
until he was critically injured by falling lumber. At the end of the letter,
the writer -- "...your friend Mr. Murphey"
-- said, "...during those years we pronounced the name, "Bagley," as the Berthels
were called "Battle"
and the Schloeders were called "Slaters." So much for FAMILY spellings!
Below are the descendants of Orlando S.
Baglin, Sr. who emigrated from England in 1847, with his bride of
several months. I am very fortunate to have among my possessions Hannah's
"soda jar,"
a glass violin-shaped bottle with a pale blue-green tint. I also have her
Bennington pottery soap dish.
I'm quite familiar with this Baglin/Bagley/Baglin
family, as it is that of my mother's mother --
Annie Mathilda Baglin, daughter of Orlando S. Baglin, Sr., and his wife Hannah
Ogier.

Bible records and handwritten letters and memoranda.

If you have any information regarding this family and

the button below. In one of the many sources from which I glean genealogical
information, and through one of the many people that are on the internet,
I have learned that there are a series of "Orlando S. Bagley" gentlemen
-- at least four generations -- who interest me greatly. One of them married
a Sargent from Massachusetts, the sister of one of my ancestors on my father's
side. Are these Bagleys related?
The name Orlando S. is not that common, it would seem
to me, and so, I wonder!
