CRAWFORD ROOTS!

The Cunningham family origins are closely connected with the Crawfords in Indiana. And, both families had origins in
the deep South. The earliest definite location, that of James Crawford and Elizabeth Engald, was Georgia.
The earliest Cunninghams that I'm sure of were in Abbeyville, South Carolina. How and why members of both families
made the migration north to Indiana, I don't know, except that the slavery issue played a part in the move
for the Cunningham family. It may have been the reason that the Crawford family moved north as well.

In any case, these two families connect in Orange County, Indiana, when Artimecia Crawford married
George Canote Sheeks, who may have been born in Maryland. Their daughter Lucina married
William Imes Washington Cunningham, my great-great-grandfather.

I am indebted to several of the Sheeks descendants, my newly-found cousins, to my cousin Adelle Hinshaw Newlon and
to my Uncle Orville Cunningham for the information found on these pages. I would have not known the Crawford
connection were it not for this research that has gone before me and which I am continuing.
I am planning on visiting the Sheeks' home in Spring Mill State Park, Indiana, this summer...
