Sarchet Roots!

Thanks to all the Sarchet families who made me feel so very welcome at the
Sarchet Family Reunion in Cambridge, Ohio, on June 24, 2000.
It was a pleasure to be with you all!

We had the opportunity to see the homes that two of the original four Sarchet brothers
built near Cambridge, the place where they first camped and decided to stay,
the very well-kept Settlers' Cemetery -- fascinating shape for two of the markers there
that I'd like to research further -- and other landmarks.

Although appearing to be French, the Sarchet family roots through which I descend are from the
Isle of Guernsey off the coast of England. It is possible that Guillaume Sarchet fled Normandy
because of religious persecution. This would be in keeping with his descendants' deep and fervent religious nature.

In a letter from my great-great-grandfather John Sarchet Ogier (son of Elizabeth Sarchet and John Ogier)
to my grandmother, Annie Mathilda Baglin -- his granddaughter -- he wrote of his deep concern for her soul.
This, despite the fact that she was an active member of, and teacher of "Sabbath School" Classes,
at the First Methodist Episcopal Church and the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington, Pennsylvania.

I have in my possession John Sarchet Ogier's diary in which every day he speaks of many
deep spiritual experiences, yearnings, hopes, condemnations and praises.
Religion was obviously a major factor in the lives of the Sarchet/Ogier families.
Of the first Guillaume Sarchet, I have no real information.
