On July 24, 2000, I had the privilege of visiting the Historic Village in Spring Mill State Park, Mitchell, Indiana.
This is not only a lovely place to see, it is the location of the home my great-great-great-grandparents built.


Now called "The Weaver's House," the Sheeks' House was the home of George and Elizabeth Canote Sheeks
from 1816 at least until his death in 1843.

It was then the home of David L. Sheeks and his family. Finally, in 1933, the home was moved to its present location
in Spring Mill State Park from the original building spot near the Sheeks Cemetery in Mitchell.

The feelings that I had as I walked into this family home were indescribable. Perhaps the strongest was a
feeling of wonder...wonder that the home had been built so well that it survived,
wonder that twelve children had lived in this relatively small house,
wonder that this ancestor of mine had built a loom for his wife and 150 years later,
my father, his great-great-grandson, had built a loom for his beloved wife, my mother.
